joyfully making disciples

Peru Missions

In 2007 UBC partnered with a group of Missionaries in Lima Peru from the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention to engage six villages located in the Andes Mountains of central Peru in a church-planting strategy called REAP or Rapid Entry Advance Plan.  Our goal is to start disciple making, indigenous, self-sufficient churches who will carry the gospel long after UBC is gone from the mountains. Since our beginning we have witnessed several hundred people professing faith in Jesus Christ and have begun at least 24 churches in the six villages.

Church Encouragement Team, 2010

On Sunday, July 25, 2010, UBC commissioned Bob Naughton, Cheryl Edwards, and Robert Dohner to follow up on Yancy Walker and John Salazar's work this Summer in the Andes Mountains. This latest team will visit two villages between July 27 and August 4. They will meet the house church leaders and train to strengthen and multiply the churches. This is the final task in the process of planting churches: teaching these new churches to start new churches in their town as well as in neighboring villages. Pray for the Church Encouragement Team to be safe in travel, fruitful in strengthening churches and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Church Planting Team, 2010

On Sunday, June 6, 2010, UBC commissioned Yancey Walker and John Salazar to live in Peru for two months in the villages of San Pedro de Casta and Carampoma to meet with believers and establish churches in each village. They left on Wednesday, June 9 for Peru.

This is Yancey's second trip to the Andes Mountains.  He lead an evangelism team of seven UBC members in August of 2008. Last Spring he taught a Discipleship Training class on the book "Church Planting Movements" by David Garrison. This book lays out the strategy for starting churches in Peru.

John will accompany Yancey in this effort. This is his third trip to the villages. He was one of the three UBC members on the initial Vision Team in August of 2007. He and his wife, Olga, returned in the summer of 2008 for several weeks.

2010 Church Planting Team: Yancey Walker & John Salazar
Both men have established relationships and seen numerous individuals profess faith in Jesus Christ. But the believers there do not have any expression of church. They have no place to meet and no official leaders. Yancey and John will endeavor to baptize new believers, enlist and train leaders and establish regular meeting times for new churches. Pray for them as they spend the next two months as our missionaries to the Huarochiri people of the Andes Mountains. Updates, praises and prayer requests are listed below and will be updated as we receive word throughout the Summer. Throughout their journey, you may email words of encouragement to Yancey at yanceyiii1@hotmail.com or John at j_osalazar@sbcglobal.net.

Discipleship & Church Planting Team, 2009

Eric and Mary Wilbur make up the Church Planting and Discipleship Team and will be in Peru November 22-29. During that week they will attempt to begin the church planting effort, disciple those who accepted Jesus last year and continue evangelizing efforts as well.

The Wilburs will spend most of the week in the village of Carampoma and plan to hold several meetings there. They will also attempt to hold a meeting in each of these surrounding villages: San Juan de Iris, Laraos and Huachupampa.

Please join us in praying for the Wilburs in these specific areas: for safe travel and good weather, for God's leading and preparing of the way, for leaders to emerge and start a local church, and for open hearts and minds to God's will.

Pray for our Discipleship Training Team, led by Kat Lowe, as they travel to San Pedro de Casta.  On this journey, the team will reinforce Bible study with the believers, invite new participants to hear about the Bible and seek opportunities to present the Gospel.

This team will be in Peru June 6 through June 13. Be sure to check out the Mission Team blog for updates during their trip.

Discipleship & Church Planting Team, 2008

This next team to Peru will be in the villages from Saturday, December 6 through Sunday, December 14. The team will follow two tracks. Team 1 will follow up on the Evangelism Team's successes in the villages of San Juan de Iris, Carmpoma, Huanza, Laraos, and Huachupampa. They will attempt to meet and disciple those who made professions of faith using Luke 9:23 as the anchor point for discipleship.

Team 2 will spend most of the week in the village of San Pedro de Casta. They will attempt to establish the beginnings of a church by identifying potential elders for the work there, baptizing one or two who can then baptize others and discipling and encouraging the Christians there to begin meeting regularly.

Pray for the logistics of the trip as well as the boldness to meet person with whom the Holy Spirit is working. Pray for fruit that remains as the team serves in the villages.
