The Five-Fold Function of the Holy Spirit (Cont.)

What does the Holy Spirit Do? (Part 2)

The Book of Acts is sometimes referred to as “The Acts of the Apostles,” but many feel it should be “The Acts of the Holy Spirit.”  He empowered the Apostles to “act.”  Examples:

  • In Acts 13:2, He calls forth and directs the Church:  “While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
  • In Acts 1:8, He empowers the Church:  “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses….”
  • The list could go on and on:  He dwells in the believer; He seals the believer; He is the “down payment” of our heritance; He intercedes for us; He guides, He grows, He gladdens and He gives help in prayer.
All that the Father and Son do, the Holy Spirit does, because He is God!  However, the Bible emphasizes certain activities for each member of the Godhead.
  • The Father was principally active in Creation.
  • The Son was principally active in Redemption
  • Many believe the Spirit is principally active in Sanctification of the believer.  He sanctifies the believer as He glorifies God the Son.
John 15:26 and 16:14 indicate the Holy Spirit’s function is to bear witness and glorify Jesus.  Every other purpose and activity of the Holy Spirit flows from this starting point.

Our purpose should be to seek the guidance and help from the Holy Spirit in every thing we do.
